B*tch Phenomenon

Growing up I have always known the definition of "bitch" as a negative thing. But when women call themselves that its considered a positive thing now? Bitch is defined as either as a female canine or an insult to a spiteful/over bearing woman. Either way, the definition for bitch isn't a compliment for women at all. Yet women are starting to compliment themselves as a bitch. Adding other adjectives in front of it as well such as "bad", "queen", perfect", etc. etc. etc. Nicki Minaj have called herself a "bad bitch" in her songs many times and Kanye West wrote a song for Kim Kardashian calling her the "perfect bitch".  Lupe Fiasco released a music video called "Bitch Bad", he states that he is trying to start a conversation about this topic and see how the world reacts to it.

I want to learn why women are so openly accepting this term so easily. Are we so easily manipulated by the media and by what others start as a "trend"? Even when its questionable as to how acceptable it should be?

In my project for this semester, I will create a Tumblr post that digs into the history of this term and also how it became popular with women. I will research how media helped popularize this term. Why women just openly accept this term. This isn't a word I'd ever want my daughter to associate herself as or have my son calling another girl this whether in a positive or negative way. I want my audience to fully understand this term(s) before just casually throwing it around because media seems to think its acceptable. I want people to think for themselves instead of allowing media or society to tell them what to accept.

  1. I think it would be interesting to look at what Disney says or doesn't say rather about LGBT love.
