Marv's Proposal.
For my proposal I have decided to create a video in which I record
random people answer questions about sex. I want to make a video that
illustrates different peoples options questions that we all be wondering about.
Questions like:
What does sex mean to you?
What do you think about sex on the first date?
How long do you feel you should wait before having sex?
When is it ok to have sex?
What does safe sex mean to you?
Why is sex so taboo?
How did you first learn about sex?
How will you educate your kids about sex?
Sex is something that is normal but yet is so “Hush Hush” nobody talks
about it, yet we all eventually experience it. It’s time to be more open about it and resolve any stereotypes.
Here are some examples of what my video will be like:
Semester Project
For my semester project I'm going to focus on the gender bias that women experience when taking on a career in journalism and the media industry. Most women, regardless of their skills and their ability to write and report, get pushed to the side and told to write stories that reflect on women issues. Gender shouldn't be the driving factor that determines whether a person is capable of doing their job correctly or have the drive to work to get a story out correctly, but unfortunately gender bias is still occurring today. I'll be creating a magazine online showing how there is still a gender bias when it comes to journalists and careers in the media industry and ways that people can hopefully decrease this from continuing to occur.
The way the media has portrayed women has a big impact on why men still seem to have the upper hand over women in many fields, not just journalism. The media emphasizes on women's appearance personality, family roles, or “feminine” traits, such as compassion and honesty. Men, on the other hand, are more likely to be portrayed as experienced, competent leaders.
We watched this clip in class, but it really shows how the media women in so many different fields. How are women supposed to be taken serious when the media portrays them as just images for men to look at.
According to an article in the Washington Post, gender bias is slowly declining. People are no longer noticing the way a person is represented by their appearance, but if they are capable to get a job done.
Final preview - Women degrading in media
I will be dedicating my final project to "Why and How Do Women Get Treated Differently in the Media". This has many branches that come out that I want to point out and discuss.
-Why are there not as many older women news anchors than older men news anchors.
http://www.businessinsider.com/age-discrimination-on-tv-10-anchors-who-were-replaced-by-younger-women-2012-8?op=1
We as a class read this in our readings in Naomi Wolf's, The Beauty Myth. In the article she discussed that beauty and youth are used as tools to prevent women from becoming to powerful, as men become wise as they age with there "White hair" as a symbol of "respect" Women however are taught to dread age however are only allowed the power when young.
Below is Janet Pechinpaugh, who was rewarded $3.79 after suing CBS for wrongful demotion due to her age in 1995.

-Women have a choice, why do they choose to be treated in a negative way such as being on reality shows such as "The Bachelor".
Women who are in shows such as, "The Bachelor" have a choice to be degraded on these reality shows. There are 25 women competing for a relationship with one man who most likely will not last so long after the show ends. There are many debates and arguments that discuss this. I want to go ahead and interview a few women in different age groups and from different races to see how they feel.
Niko's Midterm Proposal
I aim to attack the advertising campaigns that run photos of dramatically skinny woman, specifically, hand bag commercials that feature skinny models. Why? I think this is an outrage that guides innocent girls towards wanting a skinny body and making a link between status, wealth, and gone too far slenderness. My alternative marketing campaign, which is to work for Coach, is to draw women of normal or even voluptuous body types and photo shop in or draw hand bags on the woman, and write clever puns to generate interest in the bags. For example, "rock Coach, it's first class." Or, "Of all our Coach bags, this is a Phil Jackson". My ads will be of the format to print full size in newspapers.
Semester Project
I've decided to create a PSA film that revolves around the issue of self identity and image. There will be various individuals documented from all over the country; they simply look straight into the camera, at their audiences, after I ask them to do nothing but act as themselves. To smile. To dance. To do what they feel defines them comfortably as a human being. Throughout the piece, a narrator will ask questions like "what does it mean to be beautiful? Is beauty purely subjective? What does it take to be happy?" An example of a scenario would be:
NARRATOR: Is this what love looks like?
(shot of an interracial couple holding hands)
NARRATOR: Or is this what love looks like?
(shows two men holding hands).
The piece will explore the intricate differences, as well as similarities, between all human beings (going beyond the superficiality). I want to execute the piece with a very particular stylistic approach, but my primary goal is to provide content that sticks with my audience rather than just impress them with visuals.
I was inspired by a close friend's recent documentary showreel, that depicted various individuals from around the world. Each subject was closely analyzed and interviewed, and (as both a an aspiring filmmaker and audience member) I was enthralled to discover how individuals from such different situations could face such similar life challenges.
IDEA BOOK PROPOSAL
My semester project is to create an idea book, It is s a journal that is established to bring
together three themes; today’s media, a social work perspective with an
artistic twist. These three themes have all influenced my life in one way or
another, I feel as if this would be a good project for young adolescents. It
focuses on todays social problems through media and through social work aspect
it will help students stay focused on there goals. In an artistic aspect, it
will help students express the way they feel that social problems they face everyday in a creative way.
The topic for today’s media will be a lecture
on racial discriminations. What is racial discrimination and how does it effect us on a dailty basis ? (Discriminatory or abusive behavior towards members of another race) We
will watch a two minute clip and discuss how we are affected by discrimination
in our everyday lives. As for the social work aspect students are to introduce
themselves to their book. On three separate pages will discuss ideas /beliefs, values,
and passions. They are required to define each word and have at least three different ideas /beliefs, values, and passions on each page.
Decorating your book is where your
artistic side comes, students are required to have their name on the cover. At
least five drawings of things you love and your favorite quote that best
describes you or just something you enjoy. When it comes to the artistic aspect based on the lecture given in class the students are to create a drawing, poem or song to
express their opinions on the topic. when using images through collages, sketches, comic strips, and colors to
convey the mood of your ideal piece. Be sure to express yourself to the fullest this is your journal!

Advertisements being Art
Advertisements as Art
My presentation is about advertisement being art. Advertising like art, for the most part is about images which are trying to get a reaction out of its viewers. Since most people do not go to museums and galleries, newspaper ads, TV ads, and billboards have formed their perception of what art is.
Before the technology boom we have today, ad agencies used professional artists to paint their billboards. Though it was presented in a different context, the artists still had to keep the effort as he or she would if it was his/her own paintings. Artist like Andy Warhol made his career by merging both entities into one to create Pop Art in the 60s and 70s.
Advertising like art is used for the same purposes: one to get notice, second to make a profit out of its audience. A painting always wants to be talked about, always want people to have a feeling about the subject it’s depicting. Advertisements in a similar fashion are always looking for customers for the products that being shown.
My final project will be presented in the form of an essay. I will be looking at the history of advertising in relation to art; how it was used in the beginning, and how it has developed into this billion dollar entity. I will also be looking at its purpose, and how it used different forms to get its message across. And I will also make a compare and contrast analysis between the two entities. I’m making this project because I am in the art field, and I feel like advertising has eclipsed art in term of the message they are trying to send across, audience, and finance. They are both there for the same purpose but for different value.
