Semester Project - Advertisements and Children

For my semester project, I wanted to address that ads have an affect on children. I created a short video that is meant to give awareness about the power that advertisements have on the younger generation. Children begin their consumer journey in infancy and because children are currently growing up in the most media-influenced generation in the history of man, I thought it would be important to produce a PSA like video making more people aware of the issue. I would like to show my video to my public relations internship because they deal with many clients who do have children as their target audience. Here are some facts about the consumption of media that parents should enforce to their children. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that kids under 2 years old should not watch any TV and those older than 2 should watch no more than 1 to 2 hours a day of quality programming. Unfortunately, most kids plug into the world of television long before they enter school.

According to the Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF):
  • Two-thirds of infants and toddlers watch a screen an average of 2 hours a day
  • Kids under age 6 watch an average of about 2 hours of screen media a day, primarily TV and videos or DVDs
  • Kids and teens 8 to 18 years spend nearly 4 hours a day in front of a TV screen and almost 2 additional hours on the computer (outside of schoolwork) and playing video games
