Semester Project: The Evolution of Disney Princesses
Since the beginning Disney princesses have shared the same aspirations of wanting to be married and loved by a handsome prince. There is so much more to life than chasing around a prince and Disney princesses should have some sort of balance between romantic stories and stories about strong and independent princesses; something like a cross between Laura Croft and a Disney Princess would be an interesting spin on things. Rapunzel, which is my favorite princess, is very adventurous and is probably the most dynamic princess thus far. Flynn Rider and Rapunzel are a dynamic duo and she remains the lead character throughout the entire film.
Snow White started the legacy of Disney Princesses and the foundation that she created as a princess has changed since the 1950s. Snow White's character is very demure and polite and graceful and with the newest princess Rapunzel is the complete opposite.
The princess and the frog is another great film that sparked a lot of controversy because of some of the choices that were made and because it is the first black princess film. I dont believe that Disney would create a film that would intentionally offend any of their audience members because they appeal to such a wide range of children from all different kinds of ethnic backgrounds. It was a very smart move for Disney to edit The Princess and the Frog before it was released because black people have the barriers and discrimination that were set against them since the beginning of slavery. This film would probably have gotten the worse backlash if it were really offensive. When children watch movies they do not look as deep into certain issues that adults may find wrong with the movie so most things that are controversial are things that kids don't think too much of in the first place. Disney has definitely made major improvement over the past couple of decades and people need to acknowledge the fact that they have come a very long way.
