Who owns the media?
In the United States,  media ownership is dominated by six large corporations that dertermine the content that we see and hear today. Disney, Viacom, Newscorp and Time Warner are among the largest.

What is the problem with that?  Concentration of media owership by these large media conglomerates is very problematic. For starters, only these few companies are representing their views and transmitting them to the masses. Where are their alliences? Because of their comercially driven nature,  they are loyal to their sponsors due to the revenue that they make from advertising.

Most of the news organizations that we're accustomed to seeing, are part of these large conglomerates. The American Broadcasting Company, ABC, one of the original tree networks of television,  is owned by Disney. For this reason, they are restricted in the content of information that they give to the public.

Alternative media is responsible for providing news, information outside of what the mainstream media provides. With the growing power that this digital era provides, I believe that alternative media will replace the mowerful mainstream media as a source for content.

A great example of an alternative news source would be Democracy Now!

"Amy Goodman is the host and executive producer of Democracy Now!, a national, daily, independent, award-winning news program airing on over 1,100 public television and radio stations worldwide." - Democracy Now!

Democracy Now! is an independent organization of news and opinions. Because democracy now is not owned by large corporation, unlike ABC, democracy now is able to give the kind of information that ABC does not.
