Mashable.com has defined reddit as a social news website where users can post links to content on the web. Other users may then vote the posted links up or down, causing them to appear more or less prominently on the reddit home page. While reddit.com can and is used as a news aggregator, the usersare the ones who determine the popularity. Users can also create their own content and (re)distribute the information via different subreddits. reddit.com was created as a While reddit was bought by Conde Nast in 2006, they began to operate independently as a subsidiary of Advance Publications in 2011. It's successful as an alternative to mainstream media source because it allows its users to create and in some cases moderate, content that is posted. The diverseness of the users (redditors), allow all sorts of content to be submitted on the website. Users can subscribe to different subreddits to view topics that they are interested in. For example, /r/TwoXChromosomes, describes the subreddit as "Anything relevant to the existence and/or experience of girlhood, from any perspective." While /r/aww is a subreddit dedicated to "Things that make you go AWW! -- like puppies, and bunnies, and so on..."
