The Evolution of Disney Princesses

Disney princesses have changed in the past century based on the time period that the movies have been presented. For instance Snow White was created in a time when having fair skin was considered to be one of the traits that epitomized  having true womanhood which is a concept from the value system of  the early 19th century. There has not been one single black princess until recently because having darker skin in the 1920s and 30s was not accepted in White American culture. The princesses have changed over time with regards to different feminism waves as well. The ideas of womanhood have been represented in Disney movies and I want to explore the ways in which they have.

I would like to create a video on YouTube featuring different images of women in the 19th century based on specific periods such as the 1930s to the 1950s and then skipping to the 1980s to the mid 90s. The video will have different images (possibly video clips) and I will also do a voice over to discuss some of the images. Through my voice over I want my audience who are people that grew up watching Disney movies.( People in their 20s-30s)  In the video I would like to compare the princesses to the ways that women behaved as a culture of the United States as well as the way that women were portrayed in advertisements. Within this video I will discuss the sexism in real life of that time period compared to the sexism shown in the movie and I will also discuss the gender roles of that time period.

The questions that will remain during throughout the video is has Disney shown accurate descriptions of the ways that women behaved during that time period?
