Proposal (Women in Media)

Women in the Media

The media is the message and the messenger. Media became the most powerful tool of 'educating' our society. We are living in a the era of internet and children get the idea of what they should be very early on. For women it is all about the beauty, not the brain.

Exploitation of women's bodies sells the product. These images shows girls from a young age what is beautiful. It shows boys at a young age what they 'need' to look for in women.

The most powerful women in the country are often scrutinized in the media. Comments and jokes about their makeup, outfit, and body are usually the main focus. If the media has the power to talk with such disrespect about some of the most powerful women in the country, then how will anyone take any women serious when it comes to a position in power?

"If you get a powerful women in the office, what is the downside?"
- "Oh you mean besides the PMS and the mood swings? "
................

"Little boys and little girls, at seven years old, an equal number want to grow up and be the president of the United States. But then you ask the same question at fifteen and you see this massive gap emerge."

Sexism will always exist, to some people. Many people don't want a woman lawyer because "that's not a real lawyer". That's because for years only men are shown in the media as prosecutors and defense attorneys. If that is all people see, then the absurd idea that there are no intelligent and able women in the legal system continues. Once again, the media controls what we know, how we learn, and how we will think about the world.

(0:20)                 'Being in a room full of men, and being asking to get the coffee.'
'I want a real lawyer, I want that guy!"

Women scrutinizing other women are always showed in the media, yet it is barely shown when women stick up for each other. Why? I'm sure it gets more views and higher ratings and its funny, but if the media has the power to educate and inform society why not do it in a positive way instead of brainwashing everyone at a young age? Oh, because it is easier, funnier, and convenient. Things are starting to change a little bit in the last couple years, but are they changing fast enough?
