For my semester project I'm going to focus on the gender bias that women experience when taking on a career in journalism and the media industry. Most women, regardless of their skills and their ability to write and report, get pushed to the side and told to write stories that reflect on women issues. Gender shouldn't be the driving factor that determines whether a person is capable of doing their job correctly or have the drive to work to get a story out correctly, but unfortunately gender bias is still occurring today. I'll be creating a magazine online showing how there is still a gender bias when it comes to journalists and careers in the media industry and ways that people can hopefully decrease this from continuing to occur.
The way the media has portrayed women has a big impact on why men still seem to have the upper hand over women in many fields, not just journalism. The media emphasizes on women's appearance personality, family roles, or “feminine” traits, such as compassion and honesty. Men, on the other hand, are more likely to be portrayed as experienced, competent leaders.
We watched this clip in class, but it really shows how the media women in so many different fields. How are women supposed to be taken serious when the media portrays them as just images for men to look at.
According to an article in the Washington Post, gender bias is slowly declining. People are no longer noticing the way a person is represented by their appearance, but if they are capable to get a job done.
