The power that advertisement have over society is highly significant. Ads play on the stereotypes that society puts out. Thinner is better. Blondes are stupid, Big boobs are prettier. Men are dominant. All the things that are ignorant but are socially accepted are advertised daily in ads. They promote racism, when they only use lighter skin gilrs or , the blonde hair blue eye girl. Ads also promote the differences in males and females, when it constantly plays on the hierarchy roles of the male, males being more dominant, and females being helpless. We have to admit that ads are everywhere and that even if we try to ignore them it's impossible. We see ads everywhere constantly showing us who to be, how to be, and how to be better than who we are. The purpose of these images is to embrace sexism, racism, and power hierarchies. I feel like women are targeted most in a negative way.
Women, can you win? If women are placed in magazines or ads in which the main audience is women, then that woman, is being told to make herself better, to better please the "man". She's being told how to cook, how to clean, how to keep her man satisfied, how to make herself look prettier. If she's placed in a magazine that's targeted for men then she's solely there for the eyes of men, her beauty is the only thing she has to offer. Big picture here, women are judged on how they look. "They enabled the harassed mother, the overburdened housewife, to make contact with her ideal self: that self which aspires to be a good wife, a good mother, and an efficient home-maker ... Women's expected role in society [was] to strive after perfection in all three roles" (64, Culture, Naomi Wolf) As Wolf comments on the role of women she mentions that media, ads embrace and support that women have a role in society. That she is to be "perfect" in the terms of being a good mother, wife, and home maker; she loses her real identity because she is constantly doing for others, and she is not offering her best, she is not being heard.
Shhhh! Women are being shushed by every ad out there. Clairol tells her dye your hair blonde, maxim tells her diet to a size zero. Cooking ads encourages her to cook. Revlon tells her plaster this mascara, foundation, lipstick on your face, and tide constantly reminds her about her chores and responsibility as a women. All these ads are saying make yourself into the "dream" women and you will be admired by men. Women are being silenced by their beauty "... Is this harmless wordplay, or is it sophisticated and clever marketing ploy on research about the silencing of girls, deliberately designed to attract them with the promise of at least some form of self expression?" (140, Cutting Girls Down to SIze, Jean Kilbourne )" By selling mascara advertisers are telling women, your beauty is in your eyes, don't speak let your eyes do the talking. Women are encouraged no to talk too much or too loudly. Now if a women chooses not to comply to the pressures of society and they actually object then they are seen as a feminist. And OMG it can't get any worse than a feminist. Granted feminist are women who believe in being liberated, having a voice, but ... I'm still trying to figure out what's wrong with that. "Most young women fear that if they call themselves feminist, they will lose male favor, they will not be loved by men" (107, Bell Hooks, Feminist Manhood) Women fear that they can't have it all.
Women equal to men moving forward
Black and white is what the ads give these girls. Either you aspire to be as beautiful as the great Marilyn Mondoe or you're just (any famous feminist name) Where are the ads that support the girl in the middle. The girl who wants to get dolled up for herself, just to bring satisfaction to herself. What happens to the girl who loves fashion, and believes in Princess's, but at the same time enjoys football and driving a fast car, and is up to date with all the latest gadgets. Where are the ads that supports that girl? Why isn't media embracing that girl. Advertise for the girl who loves sports, who enjoys eating out and having beer like the next guy.
Media needs to balance out the messages in which it sends to girls, and sometimes even guys. Right? Guys are being targeted. If you put Ads with guys driving fast cars, being aggressive, being submissive and abusive to women; obviously this gives them the okay to treat women in this manner ("As the new millennium dawned, it seemed that this angry white male was riding rather high in the saddle, reassured of his dominance after decades of assault by feminists, gay liberations, affirmative activists, and liberal academics" (5, Misframing Men, Micheal Kimmel) whether or not you think media doesn't affect your life it certainly does, it sends out messages that are socially accepted. Majority of men most certainly think that crying is for females, that in the kitchen looking pretty is where the female should be seen and not heard. And unfortunately I've heard so many women say "you don't know how to cook or clean, I feel sorry for the man that will marry you" Oddly I'm never taken aback, because girls have been brainwashed. What law was made that said a female had to cook and clean, last time I check men and women are differentiated by a small percentage.
